How to Leverage Social Media for Your Music

June 25, 20263 min read

How do you actually use social media to benefit your music? Is it worth it? How do you avoid burnout? Every artist has to navigate this challenge in 2026, but few have a real strategy that is music focused, cost effective and sustainable, and grounded in who they actually are. If you don't incorporate these core concepts into your relationship with social media, it's going to be a huge struggle to stay consistent. These are our top 6 tips on how to best leverage social media for your music.

TIP #1: Create a strategy that gives the algorithm what it wants, but gives you what you want

Social media continues to demand more from it's users and content creators. Artists are unfortunately not exempt from this. All of these platforms prioritize accounts that consistently post highly engaging content, and as the landscape has become more populated with more artists trying to build fanbases, the competition for attention has gotten harder. That means you now have to post at least 1x/day to be considered "consistent" by the algorithm. Can you break through with the occasional insanely amazing post that goes viral? Possibly. Will that be your 1st or 3rd or 10th video? Probably not.

The reality here is that artists are, in general, very bad at making good content. This is good, because they are supposed to be focusing on making great art. But it is also bad, because no one will see it if it doesn't break through the algorithm (unless you've got money to pay for ads, and even then you need a lot of money and it'll reach more people if the ad is "engaging content"). I'm sure you see the problem here.

The solution is to come up with a strategy that meets the minimum requirements of the algorithm and is engaging but doesn't suck away your life. What does that look like? Let's jump into it

TIP #2: What the algorithm wants

The algorithm is simple. It prioritizes "engagement", which is some combination of the following factors:

  1. Watch time

  2. Comments (and quality of comments)

  3. Shares/reposts

  4. Saves

  5. Likes

People have been "engagement hacking" for ages, and because of how our human brains have evolved, we continue to fall for this. The best way to keep people on your posts seems to be rage baiting, which makes people watch your whole video, comment how you're wrong (and fight about it with you and with your fans who support you, which creates more comments and more watch time), and send it to their friends to show how dumb you are. Rage = money, and it's disgusting. Great art can still breakthrough, but you have to algorithm hack to some extent. Thankfully, you can do this with a few simple steps:

FOR WATCH TIME:

  1. Have a good opening hook to open a loop in the viewer's mind (in the first 3 seconds). This should promise some sort of value to the person watching, ask a question that they now need to watch the video to get the answer to, or both. the clearer you are with the value promise at the beginning, the more people will stay and watch. This will improve your watch time DRAMATICALLY. If you're doing this well, you're also calling our your target audience in the hook so it makes them specifically stay longer, which will make the social media platform bring in more people like them to watch your video

  2. Include more hooks throughout the video as soon as you close loops. This keeps people sticking around

  3. Keep things changing throughout the video to keep interest high. Don't just play the same part of the song over and over

  4. Keep the video shorter, a short video with high watch percentage is better than a longer video with a shorter watch percentage

FOR COMMENTS:

  1. Ask viewers for their opinion. This seems simple but it works

  2. Do something truly epic or say something insightful.
